I recently had the opportunity to share my story and talk about my journey as a student-athlete — from Oceanside Collegiate Acaemy to Coastal Carolina to Syracuse — on The NIL Clubhouse podcast conversation that was particularly meaningful to me.
My path through college athletics has been about much more than competing. It has been about growth, adapting to change, building relationships, overcoming challenges and learning how to balance academics, athletics and life beyond the field.
From Coastal Carolina to Syracuse
Every student-athlete’s journey is different.
For me, the transition from Oceanside Collegiate Academy to Coastal Carolina to Syracuse represented a significant new chapters. Changing schools, environments and expectations requires a tremendous amount of adjustment, but it also creates opportunities to grow in ways you may not anticipate.
Looking back, some of the most important lessons I’ve learned have come from those moments of change.
College athletics teaches you how to compete, but it also teaches you how to prepare, communicate, handle adversity and continue moving forward when things don’t go exactly as planned.
More Than an Athlete
One of the things I appreciated about this conversation was the opportunity to talk about the person behind the athlete.
Student-athletes spend an enormous amount of time focused on their sport, but their college experience is also an important part of preparing for life after athletics.
The relationships you build, the education you receive, the experiences you have and the challenges you overcome all become part of who you are long after your playing career ends.
That’s something I believe is extremely important for today’s student-athletes to recognize.
You are more than your statistics, your position or your sport.
You are building a foundation for the rest of your life.
The Changing World of College Athletics
College athletics is changing rapidly.
The opportunities available to student-athletes today are very different from those available to previous generations. NIL, the transfer portal, conference realignment, new media opportunities and the increasing professionalization of college sports are creating an entirely new environment.
With those opportunities come new responsibilities.
Student-athletes have to think about their education, their personal brand, their financial future, their relationships and what they want their lives to look like after college.
I believe those conversations are just as important as what happens during competition.
Sharing the Journey
Being able to look back at my journey from Coastal Carolina to Syracuse and share some of those experiences was something I really enjoyed.
Hopefully, my story can provide encouragement to other student-athletes who may be going through their own transitions or trying to figure out what comes next.
There isn’t always a straight line.
Sometimes the unexpected changes in your journey end up becoming the experiences that shape you the most.
I’m grateful for the opportunities I’ve had, the people who have supported me along the way and the lessons I’ve learned through both the successes and the challenges.
